The Alden B. Dow Home and Studio, Screened Porch Mobile

The porch overlooking the pond of architect Alden B. Dow’s sprawling home was the inspiration for the Dow Screened Porch mobile by Albert Chmelar. This magnificent residence completed in 1941 was designated a national historic landmark in 1989. Acknowledged as a masterpiece of Dow’s work, Architectural Digest has called it “one of the two most beautiful contemporary homes in America.” Notable features of the building are its bright vibrant colors and close relationship to the outdoors. Located at the rear of the home the raised porch hovers above the water and affords expansive views of the surrounding landscape. Brightly upholstered lounge chairs by the sculptor Harry Bertoia invite visitors to sit, relax, and enjoy the moment.
Composed of five horizontal elements, the Dow Screened Porch mobile was inspired by the colors and materials found in that space. The character of the horizontal wood railings manifest as the predominant attribute of the mobile, while the yellow and blue derive from the upholstery of the iconic Bertoia chairs. By use of color and kinetics this mobile aims to grab our attention and separate us from the everyday. Through gentle patterns of movement brought on by the most minor draft, this sculpture provides a moment of peace and contemplation from our busy lives.
