Mid-Century Modern Midland, Hardcover
By: Carol Neff and Craig McDonald
This stunning 244-page coffee table book chronicles Midland’s unprecedented architectural legacy and validates Midland, Michigan as the Mid-Century Modern (MCM) City of America. Browse its pages to see new and historic photographs of residential, religious, educational, commercial, and civic Mid-Century Modern structures built between 1930 and 1970. Learn the story of MCM architecture in Midland – inspired by Midland native and architect Alden B. Dow – and see how more than 50 architects, designers and engineers contributed to the MCM movement, each expressing their unique style of modernism.
The book was compiled from multiple years of research, gathering information from current and former building owners and asking the community to assist in documenting the city’s MCM history. A mostly volunteer team surveyed 36 square miles in the city of Midland, helping to identify 403 structures built during the 40-year time period.
