The Program

An inspirational place to write

The Young Writers' Studio is an after‑school writing club for middle school students, featuring monthly meetings at the Alden B. Dow Home & Studio on the second Tuesday of the month. Open to 6th–8th grade writers of all skill levels — discover an inspirational setting, a supportive place to share, and focused time to delve into your creativity.

Students gather in their school's YWS Teacher Liaison's classroom and ride the bus to the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio. After a snack and time to chat, they find a comfortable spot and begin writing. They can select from engaging writing prompts or follow their own creativity. Students have the opportunity to share — if they wish — and talk about the writing process. Then, they gather their belongings to meet their rides in the circular drive.

Getting There

Transportation & the circle drive

Students ride the bus from their school to the Alden B. Dow Home & Studio for free. Please note there is no bussing home.

At 4:45 PM, Parents / Adults Responsible (listed on the registration form) wait at the gate and are then guided into the circular drive of the Home & Studio at 315 Post Street · (989) 839‑2744.

  • SuppliesEach participant receives a writer's notebook to bring to every visit.
  • SnacksDonations for snacks are appreciated — simply send funds in an envelope to the Teacher Liaison.
