In 1941 Alden B. Dow F.A.I.A. (1904-1983) submitted the patent for the design of the back of this deck of cards.  “The dominant feature of my design consists in the arrangement in the order of their value of the various poker hand combinations.”  In addition to being a noted architect, active from the early 1930s through the late 1970s, he designed some six hundred projects, and held several patents.  Throughout his career he received numerous awards and recognitions including his own home and studio being designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989.
